ATIS only provides you ground weather info; But do we really need to know the actual Wind information to make wind correction?
During a Holding pattern, the inbound leg is the only one leg with guidance,s we can use it as reference.
e.g. From picture on the right, inbound radial 270⁰ right turn.
as the aircraft flying flying inbound on course 090⁰ with VOR aid. The Wind Correction Angle can be found~ then, apply the 3x WCA on outbound leg to compensate. observe the discrepancy and fine tune the angle.
I believe 'Practice makes perfect'.If you spent more time on practicing holding pattern, you will get used to it very easily. For me, the most difficult part is applying wind correction angle when holding.
As ATIS only provide the surface wind of the runway, how do you know the exact wind direction and speed, so you can calculate the wind correction angle?
Is there any types of program/ autopilot to help airliner pilot to make that holding pattern? Sounds terrifying if you have to hold for 30min-2hours and you have to make the turn every minute.
Thanks for the detailed explanation! Appreciated

The 5T for holdings is actually very nice.
