Maybe; but usually when airline buy aircrafts; it comes with maintenance /training credits; so initially it wont be a big training cost. However, in the long run, i hv no idea which would cost more. Invest on new aircraft trainings; or the savings with the latest technology.

Could the training cost for 787 type rating possibly be one of the factors as well?

Yes, but every type got their own issues. I bet 777X would also hv their own problem as well. I wonder how durable is that folding wing tip.
